Join this Danube private tour making you explore the history of this part of Europe. The natural characteristics of the Iron Gate are the main causes of the vibrant history of this part of the Danube.

The tour starts from an arranged place early morning and after two hours drive through the heart of the Braničevo county, we reach the bank of Danube and the town of Golubac, close to the Golubac fortress. This Medieval town is placed at the entrance of Iron Gate and touches Danube waters with part of its walls. Many legends are connected to this fortress and four of them are in relation to its name. There is no reliable data about the fortification’s construction date, only assumption that it was built in the 13th century. The only known fact is that there were four different nations ruling over Golubac fortress, Serbia, Turkey, Austria and Hungary.

Straight from Golubac we continue down the Danube road and after 30 minutes we arrive to Lepenski vir – the oldest organized settlement in Europe. The settlement was founded around 7000 BC and lasted till 4500 BC when people of Lepenski vir moved on in search of bigger arable land. The archaeological site is in perfect condition and it consists of several parts. Uniquene of this place, is the fact that the whole settlement was moved from its original location retaining absolutely the same items and set-up from the time when people of Lepenski vir lived there. All items and elements are completely authentic. In the visitor centre there is also a fascinating museum exhibition with objects and human remains found in the village which are exquisitely preserved. Video projection, holographic display, 3D interactive application are additional amenities which will take you millenniums back.

Continue the tour through the town of Donji Milanovac, towards the prettiest part of Iron Gate, gorges Mali and Veliki kazan. For the fit ones, we can arrange a climb to Ploče viewpoint, from which you have fascinating views towards the Iron Gate. This is the place where all famous photos of the gorge were taken.

After walking and enjoying the views we stop for a deserved lunch break. Best possible place to experience local hospitality, food and charm is Captain’s Misa Hill ethno complex where kind hosts serve traditional local food in authentic surroundings with the most fascinating view.

After lunch we will go back to Belgrade where we arrive in the evening.

Please note that at any moment we can alter the route and adjust it to interests and wishes of travellers.

On this tour you will visit wineries which will give you a good overview on wine-making scene of Šumadija, from the newly established Despotika winery growing few indigenous Serbian vine sorts, over to the old Royal wine cellar with historical exhibition, through the eminent Aleksandrović winery and to the young and promising Arsenijević wine cellar.

Our first wine stop is the village of Vlaški Do and Despotika winery, a newly established winery with ambitious plans and an enthusiastic owner. Despotika has several wine labels made from different kinds of grapes, but one is unique – Morava, indigenous Serbian grape variety. Only few winemakers in Serbia grow Morava, so you’ll have a unique opportunity to try this white wine. Of course we won’t stop only with Morava, there are many Despotika’s wines to taste.

From Vlaški village, we move on to the capital of the Šumadija wine region, to Topola, where Karađorđević Royal family nurtured their vineyards and where they created the famous Trijumf wine. Royal wine cellars nowadays are publicly owned and they grow grapes on 11 hectares only, compared to 50 hectares from the period of the kingdom. The highlight of the Royal winery is the original king’s wine cellar which is in excellent condition, so you’ll have the opportunity to see how the king made his wine some 85 year ago. The biggest treasure of the Royal cellar is the old archive where they keep wines from the 1930s.

Next stop is one of the most prominent Serbian wineries from 1990s onwards, Aleksandrović winery. This is a modern, yet very traditional establishment which produces only high quality wines. An interesting story is connected to their early days, namely the old king’s winemaker, who emigrated to Canada when WWII started, had the recipe for making the famous Trijumf (Triumph) wine, so when he heard that Aleksandrović was renewing his family vineyards and starting a new winery, he sent the recipe for Trijumf wine to him, in order to continue with the tradition of Trijumf wine production, which was discontinued with communist regime taking over the Royal wine cellar. Nowadays Aleksandrović produces many different wines, but they are best known for their Trijumf range, including sparkling wines.

And finally the most promising young Šumadija winemaker expects us at the end of the tour. Wine cellar Arsenijević is young winery, but the owner and winemaker Nemanja is a great young man with great enthusiasm, vision and will to improve position of Šumadijan wine on wine map of Europe. At the moment Arsenijević offers only four wine labels, but all of them are superb, which you’ll have the opportunity to experience on your own together with selected food during lunch and wine tasting. Pay attention to his Merlot, it’s your Serbian host’s favorite one.
